Using the People feature in the Hive app
Answer

The People feature lets multiple people access the same Hive Home using their own Hive accounts, rather than sharing login details. Depending on the permission level they have been given, users can view who has access, control devices, invite others, manage permissions, or leave a home they no longer need access to.

All users can view who has access to a Hive Home and see their own permission level. Invited users can sign in with their own account to access the home and use devices according to the permission level they have been given. Only Owners and Full Access members can invite new users, remove access, and update permission levels.

What you can do with the People feature

All users:

  • See first name of people who have access to the Hive Home devices
  • Use your own Hive account to access a home you have been invited to and control devices based on your permission level.
  • Leave a Hive Home that you no longer need access to.

Owners and Full Access members can also:

  • Invite other users and manage their access level
  • See pending email invitations and check how long they have left before they expire.
  • Cancel a pending email invitation if it is no longer needed.
  • Remove access for users who no longer need access to the home.

Permission levels

Owner: The person who owns the Hive Home. Owners can invite users and assign either Full Access or Limited Access permissions.

Full Access (previously known as Partner): Gives equal access to control devices and manage most home settings.

Limited Access (previously known as Family): Lets users control devices, but they cannot manage permissions, change device settings, or install and remove devices.

Full Access members can:

  • Control devices (such as Heating and Lights)
  • Change device settings
  • Invite and remove other users
  • Change permission level of limited access members
  • [Coming back soon] Install and remove devices

Full Access members cannot:

  • Change your account or subscription details

Limited Access members can:

  • Control devices (such as Heating and Lights)

Limited Access members cannot:

  • Install and remove devices
  • Change device settings
  • Invite and remove other users
  • Change permission levels
  • Change your account or subscription details

To check which users have access to a Hive Home and what permission level they have, open the Manage tab and select People & Permissions.

How to invite someone to access a Hive Home

NOTE: The person you invite must have the Hive app installed and must already have their own Hive account to access devices.

  1. Open the Hive app and tap the Manage tab.
  2. Select People & Permissions.
  3. Tap Invite.
  4. Choose the permission level you want to give the user.
  5. Choose whether to invite them by QR code or by email.

If you are inviting someone by QR code, the invitee should:

  1. Open the Hive app and tap the Manage tab.
  2. Open the home picker.
  3. Tap Scan QR code.
  4. Scan the QR code shown by the person inviting you.

NOTE: If you have trouble scanning the QR code, check that camera permission is enabled for the Hive app in your device settings.

If you are inviting someone by email, once you have entered their email address the invitee should:

  1. Sign in to the Hive app using their account.
  2. Look for the pop-up on the Home dashboard and choose whether to accept or decline the invitation.

Once an invitee accepts, they can access the Hive Home from their own account, find out how to switch Home at Accessing Devices After Accepting an Invite via 'People'.
