A Guide to Hive Heating Geolocation Features

Answer

The Geolocation feature in the Hive app provides convenient alerts to ensure your home comfort. This feature helps you manage your home’s heating efficiently, ensuring you never return to a chilly house or waste energy heating an empty one.

What is Geolocation? Geolocation sends alerts to your phone if you’ve left your heating on when you’ve gone out, or if your home is below your preferred temperature when you’re nearly back.

Setting Up Geolocation

To activate Geolocation in your Hive app, follow these steps:

  • Tap into your heating.
  • In the top right corner, you’ll find the 'settings cog'. Tap on it.
  • Choose ‘Geolocation’ from the options.
  • Use the toggle switch to enable geolocation. Ensure you are connected to your home’s Wi-Fi, as your phone will set your current location as your home.

Customising Alerts

  • Setting Preferences:

    • Switch on Geolocation and set your preferred temperatures and distances from home for notifications. This allows you to receive alerts tailored to your specific needs.
  • Control and Flexibility:

    • Geolocation won’t automatically change the temperature or affect your heating schedule. Once you receive an alert, you have complete control to adjust the temperature or leave it as is.

Multiple Users: If more than one person in your home has the Hive app on their phone, they can use Geolocation too. Each person can set their own temperatures and distances to be notified at. Only the phone that’s crossing these set distances will receive an alert, so you won’t be notified unless you’re out and about.

NOTE: Geolocation is currently only available with Hive Active Heating.

Troubleshooting Geolocation Issues:

1. Internet Connectivity

  • Geolocation relies on internet connectivity to check your home’s target temperature as you pass each geofence.
  • Poor Connection: If there’s a poor connection (e.g., no Wi-Fi) at your set distances, alerts won’t trigger.
  • Solution: Consider switching on mobile data if it’s off or adjusting your “away from” and “returning” distances.
  • Restart Geolocation: Switch Geolocation off and back on again. You can do this via the Hive app by clicking on Heating > settings cog > Geolocation.

2. Background App Refresh

  • Geolocation works even when the Hive app is closed and after phone reboots without launching the app.
  • Enable Background App Refresh: Ensure Background App Refresh is enabled for Hive in your phone’s settings.
  • How to Enable: Go to your Phone’s Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn it on for the Hive app.

3. Update Your Hive App

  • Ensure you’re using the latest version of the Hive app.
  • How to Update: Go to the App Store (iOS) or Play Store (Android) and check for updates to the Hive app.

By following these steps, you can ensure that Geolocation functions smoothly and provides the alerts you need.
