Answer

Multizone heating lets you control the heating in different parts of your home. For example, you can keep the living room warm during the day without wasting heat in the bedrooms. In single zone heating, the temperature is the same in every room.

How Multizone Heating Control Systems Work

  • Two Thermostats: If you have two thermostats (e.g., one upstairs and one downstairs), you can use multizone smart thermostats like Hive Multizone to control each area from your smartphone.
  • Hive Radiator Valves: For more control, use smart thermostatic radiator valves on each radiator. Hive Radiator Valves are compatible with multizone heating installations, where each zone is controlled by a separate thermostat.

How Multizone Heating is installed

  • Smart Thermostats: It’s best to have professional installation. Hive has expert engineers who can set up Hive Multizone in your home.
  • Smart Radiator Valves: You can install these yourself. Just unscrew the old valve head, replace it with a Hive Radiator Valve, and set it up using the app.

Hive Multizone and OpenTherm

  • OpenTherm: This is a language that lets your boiler and thermostat communicate to keep your heating running smoothly.
  • Single Channel Receiver (OTR1): Supports both Standard (Relay) Mode and OpenTherm Mode. OpenTherm Mode is only for single zone systems. Support for OpenTherm multizone systems is coming later.

Installation Note

  • If installing Hive Heating on an OpenTherm-compliant zoned system, all OTR1 receivers must be set to Standard (Relay) Mode. This is position two on the switch inside the OTR1. For full details, see the installation guide.
