What is Power+?

Power+ is Hive's new smart charging offer designed to make energy savings simpler and more accessible. With Power+, you’ll receive 25% off the cost of energy whenever we smart charge your device.

Why should I use Power+?

  • Save money on charging costs: you get 25% off the cost of electricity used for charging in Power+ mode
  • Simple to use: just tell us when you need your EV ready by in the Hive app and we’ll automatically schedule your charges
  • Monthly credits straight onto your energy bill: Power+ credits are applied directly to your British Gas energy account each month, appearing as ‘Power+ EV Credit’ on the bill
  • Total flexibility: you can override the Power+ schedule at any time if you need your EV charged sooner

How does Power+ work?

Power+ automatically schedules your EV charging at the cheapest and greenest times, typically overnight.

Here’s how it works:

  • You plug in your EV and tell us when you need it ready by in the Hive app
  • We’ll handle all the smart scheduling – charging when overall grid demand is lower and renewable generation is higher
  • The Hive app manages everything in the background and keeps you updated, with the option to manually override if you need it
  • Once the charging session has finished, you can view the individual transaction in the Hive app to track your credits, cost of charge, and mileage added

How do I receive the Power+ credits?

Your savings are applied as credits directly to your British Gas energy account.

  • At the end of each calendar month, we’ll summarise all your Power+ charging sessions
  • We’ll use these to calculate the 25% credit using your British Gas energy tariff rates – we get these directly from your British Gas account
  • We then apply the credit to your British Gas energy account within a calendar month from the end of the month the credit was earned e.g. your credits earned for the month 1st February to 28th February will be applied to your account in March.
  • The monthly Power+ credit will appear on your next bill that is generated for your British Gas account. The timing of this will depend on your billing frequency, with most receiving monthly bills
  • The credit will display on your British Gas energy bill with the reference ‘Power+ EV Credit’

You can also track your total credits earned, charging statistics, and daily breakdowns through the Hive app under your EV charger activity summary.

Which devices are eligible?

To use Power+, you’ll need to have a compatible EV charger installed at your home. All Hive EV chargers are suitable, and you can see the full list of compatible devices. Keep an eye on this list if your charger isn’t currently listed, as we’ll be adding more through our Works with Hive ecosystem, supporting a growing number of eco-tech brands.

In addition to having an eligible charger, you’ll also need to meet other eligibility criteria, such as having a British Gas credit electricity tariff (any is suitable, including EV tariffs) and a communicating smart meter. You can read more about it at Power+: How It Works & Eligibility.

How do I access Power+?

Getting started with Power+ is quick and easy:

  • Get your EV charger installed
  • Set it up in the Hive app
  • Choose your British Gas electricity tariff
  • Switch on the Power+ schedule mode in the Hive app

Why has my product changed from SmartCharge to Power+?

SmartCharge had variable credit rates based on how long your device was plugged in for, which many customers found confusing. Power+ simplifies this by offering a consistent discount and allows us to expand compatibility to more devices.

What does this mean for FreeCharge?

You’ll continue to enjoy your FreeCharge benefits until:

  • You reach your usage cap, or
  • Your year of free charging ends

After that, you’ll be automatically switched to Power+.

  • You can opt out of Power+ by adjusting your charging mode in your charger schedule settings
  • We’ll remind you in the app when your free period is ending
