Understanding Missing or Zero Gas Usage Readings in Your Hive App

Answer

If you notice a zero or missing gas usage reading for a 30-minute period in your Hive app, don’t worry, your smart meter is still working and communicating. This is normal and does not affect your billing.

Why It Happens

Smart meters sometimes fail to capture a consumption value correctly and send an error code instead of a valid reading. This happens because of how smart meters report data under the industry-standard SMETS specification. Instead of leaving the field blank, the SMETS specification uses extremely high numbers as error codes. These codes indicate:

  • Invalid value – The meter returned a value that exceeds the maximum allowed.
  • Value not available – The meter responded, but the data was missing for that timestamp.
  • Invalid timestamp – The meter sent a time format that isn’t valid.

To prevent added confusion, Hive filters these high values out and replaces them with zero values to keep your graphs clear.

What You’ll See

  • A zero reading for a half-hour period where an error occurred.
  • A small question mark icon next to the reading—tap it to learn more.
  • Your daily totals may show fewer periods (e.g., 46 instead of 48) because invalid readings are omitted.

What to Expect

  • These gaps are rare and temporary.
  • They do not mean your meter is broken or that you weren’t using energy.
  • Your billing remains accurate because it uses validated readings.

Why It’s Nothing to Worry About

This is a normal part of how smart meters communicate under the SMETS standard. Your energy supplier ensures these anomalies don’t affect your costs, and Hive ensures you can still track overall usage trends. No action is required from you; your system is working as expected.
