Answer
The Carbon Calculator helps you understand how much carbon you’re saving by reducing your energy use. Your carbon savings are calculated in the same way as your monetary savings, using the energy consumption information you provide when activating Hive+.
How the Calculation Works
1. Using Your Energy Consumption Data
When you activate Hive+, you share details from a recent energy bill. This allows us to understand your current annual energy usage.
From there, Hive+ tracks whether you use more or less energy than your forecasted annual consumption.
- If you use less energy than forecasted, this counts as a saving.
- These savings are then shown in both monetary and carbon terms.
2. Converting Energy Savings to Carbon Savings
For every unit of energy saved, we apply a standard conversion factor to estimate your carbon reduction.
- 1 kWh of energy saved = 0.18 kgCO₂e of carbon saved
This conversion is based on the 2022 gross calorific value conversion factor for natural gas, as published by the UK Government.
